I am an American painter who uses Arabic script (both phrases and ideographs) and Islamic design in my work. My work is much admired but I have found the inclusion of Arabic means few sales, even in San Francisco, a fairly liberal city. One of the goals of my work is to show how stereotypes (especially of Arabs) just doesn't make sense. BTW, I do not speak Arabic and do not have an Arab or Islamic background.
